Palestinians are under siege, with the harshest oppression occurring in the territories Israel has illegally occupied since 1967. Israel does not act alone. US government and corporate support is an integral and indispensable enabler of all of Israel’s aggression. Israel is the world’s largest recipient of US military aid. This government spending is in turn a boon for large corporations, particularly in the US, that produce the tools of oppression. NYU, the largest private university in the US, uses the financial services company TIAA-CREF to manage its employees’ retirement savings. TIAA-CREF, the 86th largest corporation in the US, controls around $400 billion in assets. It invests this $400 billion in corporations worldwide, trying to increase the retirement savings of its members that include NYU professors and staff.

A discussion about divestment as a strategy on college campuses featuring Sherry Wolf, Stephen Shalom, and A. H.. Moderated by Jeff Goodwin
Divestment has been an important political strategy in many international campaigns. It has become increasingly used by campus groups around the world and the United States in fighting for Justice in Israel/Palestine.
This event launches Israeli Apartheid Week and focuses on the use of divestment as a political strategy by campus groups. In addition NYU SJP will be launching a campaign with particular relevance to the NYU community.

Stephen Shalom
is a professor, writer, and activist. He teaches political science at William Paterson University and is the director of the Gandhian Forum for Peace and Justice. He is a writer on social and political issues and is a contributor to Znet and Democratic Left. He is on the e-boards of the Bulletin of Concerned Asian Scholars and the democratic socialist journal, New Politics. He is the author of numerous publications and is the author of a political vision called Participatory Politics. He was a contributing writer to Utopia: Participatory Society for the 21st Century.
A. H.
is an active member of NYU Students for Justice in Palestine. She joined the group two years ago after visiting Palestine and seeing and experiencing the injustice towards its people first hand. She is a Senior at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study concentrating in Social Change in the Middle East and Theatre as a Tool for Change.
Sherry Wolf
is an independent journalist and author. She is a member of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network an advocate of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign. She was on the executive committee for the LGBT National Equality March for full civil rights in October 2009. Wolf is a member of the International Socialist Organization and an editor of the International Socialist Review.
